More often than not, the writing comes across as pretentious and refers to many abstract notions with little explanation. Ina Rilke’s translation dazzles in its ability to keep pace with Nooteboom’s pyrotechnics – here’s an extract: Zij wisten zelf niet hoe ze heetten, welke dwaze gestalten onze beperkte ogen ooit in ze herkend hadden, schorpioenen, paarden, slangen, leeuwen van brandend gas, en daaronder wij, met de onuitroeibare gedachte dat we het middelpunt waren, met diep beneden ons nog zo’n gesloten koepel, een rond en veilig scherm om ons heen dat zich altijd hetzelfde zou tonen.

The Following Story
I enjoyed mooteboom beautiful descriptions and philosophical debates, as well as the narration style that alternates between farther past, more recent past, and present. I was forever lost at sea, and even when brought to rapt attention by details provided regarding an illicit affair I never felt wholly involved in the text.

People who aren’t in a nootebkom to read a book simply because it’s short. But the barrage of Nooteboom references to ancient writers such as Ovid, Tacitus, and Cicero kept me outside and at great distance because no matter how seriously I took them the classics have never occurred to me as something I might be seriously interested in.

In the dreamlike and hypnotic “Two” Mr. Most of the narrative is a sort of stream of consciousness, living in phases in and out siuiente his body, with reminisces about Lisbon, a whiff of commentary on Latin, a short sojourn in Greek Mythology and well, just about every other esoteric subject thrown in. It starts out as the anti-Kafka – a man wakes up in his bed with the sensation that something is different but finds his body unchanged – instead, having gone to sleep in Amsterdam, he awakes in Lisbon, in the very hotel room where, 20 years earlier, the emotional high-point of his life took place, an affair with a fellow teacher.
